چکیده

Three dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations are conducted to measure the space charge limited (SCL) currents in coaxial cylindrical diodes. New cut-cell emission and absorption boundary algorithms implemented in the electromagnetic PIC code, VORPAL are utilized for this study. Comparisons of VORPAL SCL current results are made with i) theoretical SCL current results for the one dimensional planar diode, ii) analytical solutions of SCL current results for the one dimensional and two dimensional cylindrical diode cases, and iii) an experimental cylindrical diode operated as a virtual cathode oscillator. VORPAL SCL current results show agreement within a few percent with the analytical two dimensional cylindrical diode results for the non-relativistic operating voltages of 1-100 kV and within error bars with the experimental cylindrical diode results for the diode operating voltage of 340 kV.

Similarity of limiting currents in planar and cylindrical crossed- eld diodes

Limiting currents in planar crossedeld diodes have been studied for over 70 years [1][3] for B < BHull and more recently for B > BH [4]. Recent simulations of cylindrical crossedeld diodes for anode/cathode radius ratios of 2 and 5 indicate that the limiting current curve in cylindrical diodes follows the planar theory and simulations very closely [5]. Newer simulations for larger radius ratios...

A Novel Method Describing the Space Charge Limited Region in a Planar Diode

A novel and rather simple method is presented to describe the physics of space-charge region in a planar diode. The method deals with the issue in the time domain and as a consequence transient time behavior can be achieved. Potential distributions and currents obtained using this technique, supposing zero initial velocity for electrons, reveal absolute agreement with Child's results. Moreover,...

Determination of Thermo-physical Properties of Non-Newtonian Fluids Using a Coaxial Cylindrical Cell

In this study the thermal conductivity and the volumetric heat capacity of non-Newtonian fluids are investigated. These fluids find many applications in chemical, medical and food industries. They mostly have viscoelastic behavior and generally differ from Newtonian fluids. Two non-Newtonian fluids, solutions of xanthan and carboxy methyl cellulose in water with various concentrations have bee...

Particle-in-cell simulations of planar and cylindrical Langmuir probes: Floating potential and ion saturation current

Particle-in-cell and hybrid electron-Boltzmann simulations of planar and cylindrical Langmuir probes are compared with various probe theories. Floating potentials for planar and cylindrical probes are calculated and significant deviations from the typical approximation used for argon discharges of 5Te are shown. The interpretation of simulated ion saturation currents by the orbital motion limit...

An Application of the Non-conforming Crouzeix-raviart Finite Element Method to Space Charge Calculations

The calculation of space charge effects in linear accelerators is an important prerequisite to understand the interaction between charged particles and the surrounding environment. These calculations should be as efficient as possible. In this work we explore the suitability of the CrouzeixRaviart Finite Element Method for the computation of the self-field of an electron bunch. INTRODUCTION Cur...
